How should I care for my hedges?

Cedars thrive off of sunlight and water, so watering your hedges is a must. If you have a lack of water on your property, a soaker hose can be installed at the base of the hedge. You may also consider mulch and compost at the base of the hedge which will help retain humidity. Additionally, a deep root fertilizer treatment in the spring can also help to give your hedge an extra boost for the growth.

What is the ideal hedge shape?

For our climate zone, the ideal shape for your hedge would be having a wider base that will allow sun to be cast across the whole hedge, resulting in even growth. During the winter, instead of having the snow accumulate on the top of the hedge, this shape allows it to fall off the rounded top. This ensures that the hedge won’t open up from the weight of the snow, and prevent branches from being broken off.

What should I do with my hedges in the winter?

For the majority of hedges there is nothing you need to do, if they are properly shaped you can let them be. There are a few circumstances where you would want to protect your hedge with burlap, for example if it is located on a busy street where it may get splashed with salty slush or near a sidewalk where the plow may push snow up against it causing damage.

When is the best time of year to trim my hedge?

Hedges can be safely trimmed from April until November. The time of year will depend on when your hedge was last trimmed, what condition it is in, and how much trimming is required. If you need a reduction done on your hedge, an early season cut is recommended to ensure that the hedge repairs itself before winter.

How often should I trim my hedge?

The purpose of a hedge is to offer you privacy and to have an ascetically pleasing natural fence line for your property. Yearly hedge maintenance will allow the foliage to become dense. If yearly trimming is ignored, the growth starts to branch out the following year and holes will eventually appear in the foliage, resulting in a reduction of density and a loss of privacy

After a few years of branching out, the hedge’s maximum cut back benchmark will have invaded further into your property and you won’t be able to bring it back to where it was before. Regular hedge maintenance will provide you with peace of mind that your hedge will not become a nuisance and encroach your property.

How much do hedges grow a year?

On average, a hedge will grow 10” on the tops and 6” on each side per year. Cedar hedges have two growth periods per year, first in late May/June and then again in September. The new growth shows up as light green foliage at the tips of the branches.

What can happen if my hedges are neglected?

Yearly hedge maintenance is key for your cedar trees to maintain their shape and density. If hedge growth isn’t controlled, it will branch out and never be able to be brought back to its original size. If consistent trimming isn’t done on your hedge, it gives way for snow damage to be possible, the buildup of large amounts of snow can happen on branches that aren’t properly trimmed and cause them to break off and create holes in the hedge.

Vines can also be very damaging for a hedge, as their leaves will block the sun getting to the foliage and results in ‘burning of the hedge’. It is best to remove these vines and cut them off at the base as quickly as possible before they kill off the hedge.
